On December 14, 1951, Gus was patrolling for game violations in an area of the game refuge known as Catfish Creek when he came upon a man illegally hunting ducks. The man was known to Gus and has a history of illegal hunting. The man shot and killed Gus, then escaped. Warden Engeling’s body was found four days later and the murderer’s eyeglasses were found at the scene. The murderer was caught, confessed to the crime, was convicted and the death penalty was carried out.
Gus was survived by his wife, Lisa and two sons and a daughter.
